Top Urban Greening Grants in Ontario: July–December 2026

Here’s the awkward truth about environmental funding in the second half of 2026: the big federal doors are mostly shut. The 2 Billion Trees program closed to new proposals in January, EcoAction has no fall intake, and FCM’s community canopies fund closed June 30. If you plant trees and depave parking lots at neighbourhood scale, your fall money is provincial, foundation, and corporate.

The good news: that money is real, and it’s sized for neighbourhood work. Eight verified opportunities, each checked against the funder’s own page.

Closing this month

TD Friends of the Environment — July 15, 2026. The classic: schoolyard greening, park revitalization and community gardens are named on the program page. Most grants run $2,000–$8,000, and your project can’t already be underway. Next intake January 15. Apply.

The Ontario Trillium windows

Seed Grant — July 22 to August 19, 2026. $10,000–$100,000 to pilot something new. A first rain-garden program or depaving demonstration in a priority neighbourhood sits exactly in OTF’s sweet spot — and exactly in the $25K–$100K range where municipal micro-grants run out and big funders don’t yet see you. Grow Grant — October 7 to November 4, 2026. $100,000–$600,000 over two or three years to scale a program with proven results. If your tree brigades have planting numbers and survival rates, this is how one neighbourhood becomes five. Details.

Foundation and corporate windows

McLean Foundation Catalyst Grants — rolling until September 14, 2026. $20,000–$100,000 for environment and climate-action projects anywhere in Canada, with decisions in about twelve weeks. Their own language — funding to “pilot, test and explore” — is a green light for a first depave-to-pocket-park site. What we fund.

TELUS Friendly Future Foundation (Ottawa & Eastern Ontario board) — October 2, 2026. Up to $20,000 for youth-focused programs. Frame the school pollinator gardens as youth environmental education — because that’s what they are. Apply.

Enbridge Fueling Futures — rolling. Community environmental funding across Enbridge Gas’s Ontario territory (Ottawa included), decisions within 60 days, applications via Benevity. Good top-up money at any point in the window. Guidelines.

Opening in the fall

Tree Canada — Treemendous Communities — expect the call in October 2026. Up to $10,000 per project for community tree planting, and the program pairs you with a forestry specialist. Applications run October to early December for next-year planting — the funder’s page confirms the next call opens fall 2026. Program page.

WWF-Canada Go Wild School Grants — expect October 2026. Small grants (~$1,500–$2,000) for students and educators restoring habitat with native plants. Apply through your partner schools for the pollinator-garden sites. Details.

Seventeen candidates didn’t make it

Everything from Hydro One’s community fund to the City of Ottawa’s environmental grants had first-half-only deadlines or closed programs. The federal shutouts above are worth repeating to your board before someone asks “why aren’t we applying to 2 Billion Trees?”
