Top Food Justice and Urban Agriculture Grants in the US: July–December 2026

If you grow food in a city — gardens, a mobile market, youth apprenticeships — the next six months hold two federal deadlines measured in days, one always-open foundation that names your state a priority, and a stack of smaller wins. All nine below were verified against each funder’s own page.

Federal — closing July 16 (yes, that soon)

USDA Community Food Projects (CFPCGP) — July 16, 2026, 5:00 p.m. ET. The flagship federal grant for community food security: $25,000–$400,000 (planning grants at the low end, four-year projects at the top). Two things to know: gleaners and private nonprofits are explicitly eligible, and it requires a dollar-for-dollar match. Details.

USDA GusNIP Produce Prescription — also July 16, 2026. Fixed $500,000 awards, no match required. If your mobile market serves SNAP-heavy ZIP codes and you can sign a healthcare partner, you’re the intended applicant. Details.

Both close the same day. If you can only do one and you don’t have match money sitting around, GusNIP is the cleaner shot.

Foundations

W.K. Kellogg Foundation — always open. WKKF has no deadlines: submit a letter of inquiry any time and hear back within 30 business days. Michigan is one of their four priority places, and food security plus racial equity is core territory. For a Michigan food justice org, this is the most important relationship on this list. Clif Family Foundation — August 3, 2026, 11:59 p.m. PT. The second of two annual cycles, for organizations making healthy food “accessible, affordable, and culturally appropriate” — their words. General operating support; decisions by November 30. Apply.

Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan — proposal requests June 25 to July 15, 2026. The fall Community Impact cycle starts with a short open proposal request; full applications are by invitation after screening, with decisions in November. Detroit sits squarely in its seven-county footprint. Details.

Fast, small, and worth it

Walmart Local Community Grants (Cycle 3) — August 1 to November 30, 2026. $250–$5,000 per store request. Garden tools, market supplies, cooler equipment — minimal paperwork. Guidelines.

SeedMoney Challenge — apply by November 1, 2026. Crowdgranting built for food gardens: you keep 100% of what you raise in the Nov 15–Dec 15 campaign, plus challenge grants of $100–$1,000. If you run twelve gardens, that’s twelve campaigns. Apply.

Fruit Tree Planting Foundation — rolling. Not cash but close: free orchards — trees, equipment, design, training — for nonprofits with a long-term site. Perennial food production for every garden in your network. Apply.

Meijer community giving — open intake. Michigan’s hometown grocer lists food insecurity among its giving priorities and takes requests year-round (allow 60 days; you’ll need a W9). Support page.

Dropped in verification — twelve candidates

Michigan Health Endowment’s nutrition program was discontinued, Kroger’s application process couldn’t be verified on their own site, Whole Foods’ community giving requires a team-member nomination, and five USDA and foundation deadlines fell outside the window. The stale-list tax is real.
